Developed by Matanza Arms Corp. in co-operation with the Avatar Program, the AVP-600 was a 1,000 dollar solution to a 5,000,000,000 dollar problem: Avatars getting killed by wildlife or irritated Na'vi.
Avalible in three varients: Standard, for the average Avatar, Long-Barreled Hunter, for the more dangerous field missions, and Snubb-Nose Air-weight for personal who were rarely in great danger or working closely with the Na'vi (the snub is very concealable, so it is rarely noticed by Na'vi who might object to an armed Dreamwalker) and Designed to be simple, rugged, light, easily concealed, easily mastered and reliable, the AVP-600 is a six-shot, break-top double action revolver chambered to fire the 20mm Special Purpose Caliber developed alongside it. It was designed for an Avatar's 10' frame and was supposed to be issued as a personal defense weapon to Program scientists and other Avatar drivers. Unfortunately (Or fortunately, depending on your perspective) the uprising happened before the AVP-600s were supposed to be issued and so only a few of these weapons actually made it into the hands of Avatars. Those that did were very successful at reducing wildlife-related casualties, its easy-to-use double action mechanism proved simple for the scientists to master, its rugged construction and simple design were proof against any environment and it's 20mm SPC cartridge, a sort of hybrid pistol/shotgun shell loaded with a fragmenting explosive depleted uranium slug, was sufficient to kill most of the critters that threatened Avatars.
Kanine was given a set of improved and re-designed AVP's modified to also fire the 20mm rounds used by the CARB shotgun as well as the 20mm SPC, to bring with him on the ISC and issue for a new round of testing, as well as a series of new ammo types
